Reading Parish
St Georges Rd, Reading RG30 2RG
Rev Bobby Karanja Ndungu
For several years, the congregation in London maintained a connection with families in Reading, who occasionally traveled to London for worship. Rev. Kibathi also established a relationship with St. Andrews United Reformed Church through members of PCEA in Reading who were worshiping there. In 2019, following requests from several families in Reading and the surrounding areas, permission was granted to establish a worship station in Reading. On September 4, 2019, the first worship service was held. The Minister, Rev. Kibathi, accompanied by his wife Anne, Rev. Paul Irad, Rev. John Ngure, and several other leaders from London, traveled to Reading to launch the church. The service, which included Holy Communion, took place at St. Peter’s Church Hall, located at RG6 1EY, Reading. After the service, it was decided that worship would continue at the same location once a month until a suitable space for weekly services could be found. Mr. Peter Mukabi agreed to collaborate with Rev. Irad in making the necessary arrangements and coordinating efforts. In March 2020, just as we were about to commence weekly worship services, the COVID-19 lockdown was implemented, preventing physical meetings for over a year. However, members continued to join other branches for worship via Zoom. During the lockdown, Mr. Mukabi was ordained as an Elder, and he was joined by Elder Mary Wanjama, who had previously served as an Elder in Kenya.
On June 13, 2021, we held our first weekly service at Emmanuel Church in Earley, Reading. The Moderator, Pastor Edwin Kibathi, arrived with a few members from the London congregation to dedicate the premises for our weekly services.
The regular services continued to be held at Emmanuel Church until December 31, 2023, when the Moderator and the session decided to relocate the church to make it more accessible by public transport. In January 2024, the congregation moved to a new premises on St. George's Road in West Reading. This is a church building owned by the Anglican Church whose leadership has welcomed us in the facility.
There had been significant growth at Emmanuel Church, and we anticipate that this growth will accelerate at the new site due to its improved accessibility via public transportation and its proximity to the town center.
In the month of July 2024, we were joined by REV Bobby Ndungu who had arrived from Kenya. He is ordained and served with the PCEA IN Kenya for many years. The presbytery requested him to join Reading and he graciously agreed. So he is the one leading the Reading parish for now.
